 new p&p rates

Scroll down for the most recent p&p costs, effective since 29/01/2009

Every year the belgian postal system adjusts its prices, this usually means increasing them. This february they also made another change : from now there is no more standard shipping, only the more expensive priority shipping.

Pros : * everything will now arrive faster as it's all shipped with priority instead of NULLL sending out packages with standard shipping by default.

Cons : * i'm quite sure due to the increased volume of mail that will now go through the priority channel, packages will not arrive as fast compared to the previous priority system.
* although the price increase for packages for the EU is minimal, it'll become a lot more expensive to send orders outside of europe.
* They also made it more complicated since the postage cost now also depends on the size of the package.
(this is how Belgium works : make something more expensive, claim that it's better, while quality in fact goes down and make the whole thing more complicated while you're at it)

I'm currently figuring out what this will translate to in p&p costs per amount of CDs you order. I use both padded envelopes and boxes so there will be more rates to choose from. Final list of rates will be posted here soon.

Allright here are the new p&p costs, effective from today (excluding people who have orders in progress before this day). There's an increase in everything, but thanks to the cheaper envelopes i now use, the increase is not that big in the end.

1-3 CDs (small envelope) for Belgium = 2.30 euro (+0.15)
1-3 CDs (small envelope) for Europe = 6.25 euro (+0.50)
1-3 CDs (small envelope) for World = 7.15 euro (+0.50)

4-6 CDs (large envelope) for Belgium = 3.80 euro (+0.20)
4-6 CDs (large envelope) for Europe = 10.35 euro (+0.25)
4-6 CDs (large envelope) for World = 16.45 euro (-0.05)

7-8 CDs (box) for Belgium = 7.20 euro (-0.00)
7-8 CDs (box) for Europe = 11.50 euro (+0.40)
7-8 CDs (box) for World = 17.60 euro (+0.10)

9-16 CDs (box) for Belgium = 7.20 euro (-0.00)
9-16 CDs (box) for Europe = 21.00 euro (+0.30)
9-16 CDs (box) for World = 33.50 euro (+0.00)

I have started keeping track of what i actually end paying, since it differs often (mostly i pay more) than what's on their site. So these prices may still change, if so, i'll announce it here.

edit 20/01/10 : lowered 10-16 CDs cost to 21.00 (from 21.50) and instead of putting 18 CDs in a box its now max 16. Since i wrap all CDs in newspapers i don't get 18 CDs in a box anymore, but at least they're better protected.

I have to watch out or get charged nearly twice the amounts listed above.
Since a while they also take into account the size of the packages next to weight. Up to a certain point this makes sense, but there's a catch. European standards my ass. It's just so happens that these sizes are a bit smaller than most common commercial sizes of padded envelopes, so if you use these you're likely to end up in a higher weight category since it's 2-5 mm larger. At the same time, the envelopes the postal system sells are of the correct size, but insanely expensive (for instance, the carboard boxes i use are 1.50 euro and their envelopes are between 1.1 and 1.2 euros a piece, which is 4 times what i pay for the others).

Always nice when you can set the rules and at the same time use those rules for your own benefit, happens all the time in belgium. Can't complain to anyone about it since the postal system doesn't run their own offices anymore, they closed about 2 in 3 and asked grocery stores and newspaper shops to instead deal with that. Just recently they announced to start off a new project where 'the workload' on mailmen will be lowered by hiring more staff (paid minimum wages), of course the plan is to start firing the real mailmen and then offer them to come back at the new wages.

Another update. I finally found envelopes just big enough for one CD and because they're lighter than the others, packages with 1 CD fall in the lowest category. So they're a lot cheaper to send now.

I'm not sure yet if this applies to all CDs as i'm only 5 grams below the next category. Double CDs for sure won't make it and two slimcases either. I don't know yet for CDs with 8-page booklets.

So new p&p costs from today onwards :

1 CD (mini envelope) for Belgium = 1.65 euro
1 CD (mini envelope) for Europe = 3.25 euro
1 CD (mini envelope) for World = 3.70 euro

2-3 CDs (small envelope) for Belgium = 2.30 euro
2-3 CDs (small envelope) for Europe = 6.25 euro
2-3 CDs (small envelope) for World = 7.15 euro

4-6 CDs (large envelope) for Belgium = 3.80 euro
4-6 CDs (large envelope) for Europe = 10.35 euro
4-6 CDs (large envelope) for World = 16.45 euro

7-8 CDs (box) for Belgium = 7.20 euro
7-8 CDs (box) for Europe = 11.50 euro
7-8 CDs (box) for World = 17.60 euro

9-16 CDs (box) for Belgium = 7.20 euro
9-16 CDs (box) for Europe = 21.00 euro
9-16 CDs (box) for World = 33.50 euro
